Sobrevivientes

(Irina Rivkin)

Irina Rivkin
I wrote this song in 1995, in Guatemala, after speaking with a group of women who had survived the military violence there in the 1980's. Emily Shore plays guitar on the recording.

Survivors (English Translation) ©1995 Irina Rivkin

there are groups of women in guatemala, always struggling to survive
the story they will tell you can be hard to hear

(chorus) their families killed, their crops burned
these years of fire and blood will always remain in their memory

without families, without crops, overcoming hunger, fear and grief
the women work together, surviving through their artisany

(chorus)

genocide of indigenous people, hidden from the world
but the thousands of disappeared ones
will struggle forever in the hearts of their loved ones

their families killed, their crops burned
overcoming the fire and blood, the people always struggle
always lasts the hope of the people
